Celebrating World Oceans Day:

Pay attention to the contribution of the ocean to human life and livelihood

Every June 8th is World Ocean Day. The theme of this year's celebration is "Ocean: Life and Livelihood", emphasizing the importance of the ocean to the cultural life and economic survival of communities around the world. UN Secretary-General Guterres stated that more than 3 billion people depend on the sea for their livelihoods, the vast majority of which are in developing countries; while the world is working to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, “Let us end the destruction of nature Tart".

Ensure the health of the ocean

In his speech, Guterres stated that on the occasion of this year's World Oceans Day, the world is striving to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, respond to the climate crisis, and eliminate the continuing human damage to the oceans and marine resources.

He pointed out that the recently released "Second World Ocean Assessment" confirmed that many of the benefits provided by the global oceans to mankind are being damaged by our own actions.

He said: "Our oceans are full of plastic waste. From the most remote atolls to the deepest trenches, this waste is everywhere."

Overfishing causes a net loss of nearly US$90 billion each year-it also increases the vulnerability of women, who are vital to the survival of small-scale fishing companies.

In addition, carbon emissions are driving ocean warming and acidification, destroying biodiversity, causing sea levels to rise, and threatening densely populated coastal areas.

Guterres emphasized that the contribution of the ocean is vital to achieving the sustainable development goals, enabling the 1.5 degrees Celsius target of the Paris Agreement to be achieved, and ensuring the health of the oceans for present and future generations.

source of life

The ocean covers more than 70% of the earth. It is the source of our life, and the lives of human beings and all other creatures on the earth depend on the ocean.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the earth’s oxygen and is home to most of the biodiversity on the earth. The protein ingested by more than one billion people in the world also mainly comes from the ocean. And the ocean is vital to our economy. It is estimated that by 2030, the marine industry will employ 40 million people.

Despite the many benefits of the ocean, it still needs support now.

With the depletion of 90% of large fish populations and the destruction of 50% of coral reefs, the resources humans obtain from the ocean far exceed the amount that the ocean can supply. In order to protect the ocean and everything it supports, we must establish a new balance based on a true understanding of the ocean and the relationship between humans and the ocean.

Decade of Marine Science for Sustainable Development

The Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs and the non-profit organization Global Ocean and partner Blancpain jointly held an online celebration today. Thought leaders, celebrities, institutional partners, communities, entrepreneurs, and cross-industry experts from all over the world discussed the biodiversity and economic opportunities maintained by the ocean.

2021-2030 is the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. During this decade, all parties will strengthen international cooperation and develop scientific research and innovative technologies that can integrate marine science and social needs.
