EU completely banned the use of a variety of single-use plastic products.

The European Commission says EU countries should completely ban the use of single-use plastic products, such as plates, swabs and straws, from July 3.

EU Environment Commissioner Sinkevicius wrote on his Twitter account that "Europe will say goodbye to single-use plastic plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks, swabs, food and drink containers made from polystyrene foam, all biodegradable plastic products for good."

As part of the 2019 EU legislation, all EU countries should remove certain single-use plastic products from the market by July 3, 2021.

More than 80 percent of waste in the ocean is plastic. Single-use plastic products are only used for a short period of time and then discarded, so they are more likely to end up in the ocean than reusable products. The European Commission has previously noted that plastic products accumulate in the ocean and on beaches, posing a significant risk to marine fauna and human health.
